Dice Classes And Their Specificities

Dice Legacy is a survival city builder where the protagonists are dice. As we talked about in the last development blog, the whole game started with the idea of forging different kinds of dice together.

This starting mechanic drove much of the design and many pieces fell into place by themselves. First of all we wanted to make a medieval-ish game. I am not sure why exactly but this is the second time in DESTINYbit’s history that we find ourselves making a medieval game. I guess the middle ages give us a framework that is really easy to understand and that has a lot of potential to be expanded. It’s a setting where not much explanation is needed: you chop wood, grow crops, construct buildings and sometimes fight with sword and shield.

We knew we were making a medieval game and we wanted different dice to forge together so the idea of dice classes was there since day one. It took quite a while to figure out exactly which classes we wanted into the game and how much we wanted to push the game into traditional or fantasy territory. Eventually we settled with classes that are easy to understand and that at the same time can be expanded into other aspects of the game: Peasants, Citizens, Merchants, Monks and Soldiers.

Each die class has a different color and generally speaking every die starts off as a Peasant and can evolve into any one of the other classes. Most die faces are actually common between various dice but Citizens, Merchants, Monks and Soldiers all have one face that is unique only to them. What we wanted to do is make sure that the player has always access to the most common actions as well as a response to all the situations that might happen, while allowing for customization and different strategies.

Every die can Explore. Exploration is a very common action in the game which leads to uncovering the Wildlands and exploring Ruins. Work and Gather are actions common to various classes such as Monks, Merchants and Peasants. Peasants and Citizens can Build and Soldiers and Peasants can engage in Combat.

Not all classes are equally efficient from the start. Some of them start with Empowered Faces that make them more useful for certain jobs. Faces, in fact, can be individually Empowered which, in essence, makes them level up. For instance, Merchants have a “Gather x2” face, which means that when they are used on a location such as a Forest or Mine they will pick up 2 resources instead of 1.

The unique face of Citizens is “Study”, which is used in the Workshop and other buildings such as the Laboratory to pursue the kingdom’s thirst for knowledge. This allows the player not only to unlock new buildings but also to get access to more and more advanced forms of dice forging. Citizens can be obtained by upgrading Peasants in the School.

The unique face of Merchants is “Trade”, which is used in the Market and other buildings to manipulate resources. Merchants can also interact with other factions, such as The Exiled, in various ways. Merchants can be obtained by upgrading Citizens in the Merchant’s Guild.

The unique face of Monks is “Pray”, which is used in Shrines, Temples and other buildings to heal dice. Monks can also interact with The Exiled in various ways. Monks can be obtained by upgrading Citizens in the Monastery.

The unique face of Soldiers is “Raid”, which is used to attack other factions. Soldiers can be obtained by upgrading Peasants in the Barracks.

Each class leads to unique interactions and each class brings with it unique buildings that can be unlocked, with various effects. We hope to give players a lot of choices in how they want to get through the game and what kind of society they want to build. Will you fight and pillage? Or trade and buy your way to victory?

There is also one additional class of dice, known as Constructs, which are the result of Dice Forging. Constructs can be obtained from the Forge or the Laboratory. Constructs can have the faces of any other class and of any level. When a Construct is born through forging it will also obtain a new Trait. Traits are special characteristics of Dice that can be positive or negative and can affect the Die in various ways. For instance, a die with Fortitude is immune to effects, while a Meek die has its durability halved.

This is just a glimpse of all the different Dice present in the game and we’re curious to see what kind of Dice people will come up with through Empowering, Forging and more.
